Black Lanterns are deceased DC Comics characters resurrected as undead beings by the Black Lantern Power Battery during the "Blackest Night" event.
These resurrected corpses are fueled by black power rings, powered by death itself. They are not the original individuals returned to life, but rather grotesque mockeries animated by Nekron, the embodiment of death.
Black Lanterns are compelled to seek out and consume the emotional energy of living beings, primarily those with strong connections to them in life. This emotional energy strengthens Nekron and fuels his plan to extinguish all life and emotion in the universe.
